accessible apartment units

Post Content

I'm wondering if anybody has moved into an apartment unit that is specifically marked as "accessible"? If yes, and you don't mind sharing, what was going on with you when you decided to look for a such units? I live in a small apartment building, on the middle floor of three. I've lived here for 20+ years, and it's nice enough, but I'm having trouble getting around the building. There are no elevators here, just typical apartment building stairs. Specifically I've been having issues with getting up and down the stairs to the basement for laundry and bringing out the trash, and am also having some trouble getting in and out of the building itself. My apartment is one floor and has pretty open spaces, so I mostly do okay in my unit itself - but I do use a cane in the unit (and a forearm crutch outside), a shower chair, and have rearranged some furniture so I can lean on it when necessary. I'm thinking about looking for somewhere else to live, and wondering about looking for an accessible unit - I'm not sure I'm quite there yet, but maybe I am?
