Metformin Questions

I (28f) tried metformin when I was first diagnosed with PCOS , 4-5 yrs back but all it did was cause extreme diarrhea that lasted the whole time I was on it (6 months ). Did I not give it enough time to work out well or is it just not something my body can handle ? I see tons of posts praising it for being one of the main reasons they were able to get healthy weights and am wondering if I should give it another try or if there is something else that can help me reach a healthy weight.
