Frustration with women's health/PCOS social media content
Post Content
This is a rant I texted to my boyfriend while we were discussing how people on Tiktok are freaking out about birth control pills being classified as a class 1 carcinogen. They are, but I would say it comes with a big asterisk. I'll link in the comments to the article that I feel puts it in good perspective. Anyways, I ended up ranting about how content creators discuss women's health in very alarming ways, and I am posting here to see if anyone else feels the same. I feel like tiktok is currently taking women's issues like PCOS, hormones, and cortisol, and just running crazy with them and making everyone so scared so you watch their videos and buy their supplement or meal plan guide. I do feel like women's health is extremely poorly understood, researched, and the medical world is just totally fine with letting women suffer. So in theory it's good more people are bringing attention to these issues, but at the same time I feel like most content on tiktok is kind of inflammatory and fear-inducing. It really pisses me off as someone that got diagnosed with PCOS and just got so much info flung at me because the algorithm noticed I was interested in PCOS content. I watched all these short form videos that said there's so many different things I need to be worrying about and all these things I should and shouldn't be doing. It was really stressful and made me feel like I had to tear my life apart and couldn't eat and relax like a normal human. There are definitely a lot of things I do have to worry about with PCOS, and there are definitely foods to avoid, but everyone on tiktok made it seem like it was the most vital thing and you NEED TO BE MAKING ALL THESE CHANGES RIGHT NOW OR ELSE YOU'RE HURTING YOUR BODY WITHOUT REALIZING IT. Everyone's talking about the hormone cortisol in women, especially PCOS women, and now everyone's going to get all scared of the birth control pill. When I am on it and it's fixed the hormonal acne that was tearing down my self confidence. I know there is honest good info in the sea of junk online, but I feel like our society has always jumped from one health fear to another to keep everyone scared and buying things. At the same time that doesn't mean that modern medicine and science can't reveal new info about things in our life and environment cause hidden harm for our bodies, so I just feel conflicted and I don't know who to believe, so I end up not believing anything on social media, which feels like I am turning a blind eye to good information too. 😮💨😮💨
