Going mute from gagging

Post Content

Basic Demographic Info: 23M (6'0 - 200lb) No medications No diagnosis Supplementation (30mg Zinc, 5mg Creatine, Beet Root Extract) Tree Nut Allergy For preface I’ve always had a sensitive gag reflex and weird throat complex (alongside emetophobia) my entire life, struggling to swallow pills or do shots of liquor. I’ve also vaped or used nicotine pouches for 8 years now. This time last year for some reason I couldn’t swallow any solid food, my gag reflex would force me to close off my throat with my tongue whenever I tried to swallow without drinking copius amounts of water. I never received professional help on this and it kind of went away on its own after several weeks. Flash forward to a few months later (last fall), I noticed whenever I hit my vape it would make me gag and cough profusely, to the point of dry heaving. It reached a point that for 1-2 hours after hitting my vape, my gag reflex would be so triggered and activated I couldn’t bring myself to speak, from the back of my tongue pushing up against the roof of my mouth reflexively. I quit vaping and switched over to pouches fully and all my gagging qualms went away for the first few weeks. After that, nicotine pouches would produce the same gag reflex sensitivity that would leave me unable to speak. It progressively got worse and worse over the span of weeks. At first it would just be triggered when I had a pouch in my mouth and maybe a few minutes after, then developed to constantly throughout the day, even if I hadn’t had any nicotine at all recently. I’m currently quitting nicotine as a whole and haven’t had any in several days, but still find myself unable to speak. Most of the time my tongue is pressed up against my soft palette reflexively, and when it’s not I’m able to speak for a minute or two before my speech starts to irritate my gag reflex again and make it close up. I don’t have any issues breathing but if I pant too hard while running, the air will make it feel sensitive. I’m currently several days without nicotine without any change in my gagging, it’s obviously from the nicotine but still experiencing symptoms with no nicotine in my system makes me think otherwise. What could this be? Why would this only develop years and years after starting vaping? Is my body just completely incompatible with nicotine now?
