Symptoms appeared at least 4-5 years before menarche?

Post Content

I only recently realized that I don't understand why I started having hirsutism symptoms well before starting my first period as a child. I started puberty at pretty much the same time as all my peers, training bras, deodorant, discussions of shaving our legs. But at about 10-11 my mustache and beard (not just chin) hair reached the point I could no longer get away with the plucking my mother had told me all woman did to the "two or three stray chin hairs" they have. The only way to keep it all vaguely less visible was to shave it, my mother gave me wax and insisted I use that instead, but it grew back into a shadow so fast, thick, and dark that waxing wasn't gonna cut it. Maybe my memory is fuzzy about the boys my age at the time, but having watched my younger brother grow up and go through puberty, I'm fairly confident that even they hadn't started growing facial hair yet when I was already needing to shave it. Most of my peers had started their periods by this point, all the girls I knew personally had definitely started and I was always the odd one out when we talked about them because I hadn't. I wound up not getting mine until 15, so at least 4-5 years after I'd already started growing facial hair. My periods after that were irregular but painless, and reached a point at about 20-21 where they stopped completely for a calendar year only to be brought back by birth control. I wasn't technically diagnosed with PCOS until 23 funny enough. But that prompted me to request I be checked for any possible insulin resistance or prediabetes just in case so I could stay on top of things, but after testing I was told everything looked good and it didn't look like I had anything to worry about as far as that goes. I was always a lean but not underweight child and teenager and never showed any signs of metabolism/insulin problems that I can recall, along with none of my family having them. PCOS and hirsutism also don't run in my family. Has this happened to anyone else? More generally Im talking about showing symptoms of PCOS well before starting menstruation? Maybe this is long-winded and I should just ask a doctor I know, but I'm really just looking for others experiences with their timelines and google has consistently failed to understand what I'm searching for over the months its been on my mind. Sorry if this is just a bad post/question
