Switching off Omeprazole
Post Content
Hi guys. Subject - getting off of PPI due to possible nutrient absorption issues. Skip to last paragraph if you don’t want backstory/my babble. I have been on Omeprazole for 4 years. It all began because I have issues with constantly feeling like I need to clear my throat and had occasional heartburn and a few times bad reflux after eating something spicy. My primary Dr checked my thyroid and that was normal so she thought it was due to reflux. She started me on 20mg Omeprazole twice a day and then had me decrease to once a day. I had terrible heartburn and reflux after that(I had no clue rebound reflux was a thing and Dr didn’t mention it) and she referred me to a GI. They insisted on an endoscopy and said the throat stuff was probably strictures. It was completely normal but I did have a small hiatal hernia but they said it wasn’t something that would need surgery or treatment. They wanted to keep me on Omeprazole and had me at 40mg once a day for a while saying that should help my throat clearing. It never did. About two years later they switched me to 20mg saying I should eventually get off of it but have had me at the same since. My throat clearing/globus feeling have remained the same. Starting in September I started feeling like my glasses prescription was too weak bc things looked kind of blurry. I got a new prescription and it just isn’t right. Everything looks blurry like the prescription is just wrong. It’s been 2 months so I went back to the eye dr. He blamed glucose so I went to my dr for bloodwork. My glucose and a1c is in pre-diabetic range(5.9 a1c and 115 glucose) but my dr doesn’t think that’s causing vision issues, but eye dr is saying it definitely is. She also checked other things and my ferritin levels are a bit low (33 so not crazy low but lower than normal) and she is saying that I need to get off of the PPI because it’s probably causing nutrient absorption issues, but that still doesn’t explain the vision issues. She also didn’t check other things that I’ve seen nutrient wise I’ve seen (magnesium, b12). I’m now waiting for a referral to ophthalmologist. I have an already scheduled refill appt with GI for a few weeks from now. Primary Dr told me to switch to Pepcid even before that appointment to see if my symptoms improve, but it that makes me so nervous without proper step down. Anyways, if you’ve had issues with nutrient absorption, ferritin being low, and trying to get off of PPI- what did you do to make the transition as painless as possible? Any suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated!
