People of the trans community I call to you for help!

So I am a writer of stories and I'm working on my own TV show, one of my characters is trans. He was born a girl he transitioned into a man. Here's the thing. I am not trans. Therefore I cannot accurately depict a trans person. So... Tell me about transitioning! Is there side affects to surgery? How do you act when you feel someone is questioning your gender? What do transphobic people normally say to you if they find out? Are there anything you'd want to be portrayed in a trans character? Sorry if these are personal for you, I just want to make a character that is accurate and these are things I would like to know.
