Silly anecdote (NSV)
Post Content
A couple years ago I was over at a friend's house and noticed he had a pack of Oreos on the counter. I commented on them, since it was some limited-time flavour or some such. I was a few days into my latest diet and things were going well, so I didn't eat one. About a month later I was visiting him again and noticed Oreos on the counter again. I had actually managed to string together a few successful weeks of diet/exercise and was down some pounds, so I wasn't going to eat any but I asked "Oh, did you get more?" -- "No, those are the same ones." I peaked inside and there were maybe 5-6 missing. This motherfucker had Oreos sitting on his counter for a month straight, in plain sight every day, and had only indulged in like 1-2 cookies per week. I could not have junk food in my house - period - let alone sitting someplace where I would have to walk past them several times per day. My friend has never been remotely close to overweight in his life, and this was the moment I realized how different we are. I'm embarrassed to admit that this silly little occurrence fucking broke me. I realized how utterly hopeless it was, and how broken my brain was. I think I ordered pizza that night and diet #239 failed. Fast forward to today. 7 months on Wegovy and at my lowest weight in 15+ years. I'm craving a salty treat, so I grab a personal-size bag of Doritos from my snack cupboard. I eat a few and notice they are extra crunchy so I check the expiry date. Best before December 2025? When did I buy these?? September I think? Apparently in 5-6 months I got through about half of a CostCo box of 54 chip bags, maybe 1-2 bags a week. And yeah, I actually have a snack cupboard now, because my new superpower is being able to keep junk food in the house without it occupying 80% of my brain. Most days I don't want any junk and happily grab an apple or turkey pepperoni stick. I knew after the Oreo story that there was something wrong with my brain, but I don't think I fully grasped how bad the food noise was until it was gone.
