Surgery Specialist Cost

I just got out of my surgery consultation appointment- the upfront surgery cost is 13k since the specialist is out of network. He’s a world renowned specialist, people come from all over to see him. I’m just feeling a little nauseous thinking about 13k. For those who have had surgery, what was your out of pocket cost?
