Struggling to eat after pancreatic surgery (tumor resection)
Post Content
38 M, 110 lbs, 5'9''. Location: abdomen (pancreas? stomach?) Duration: 2 weeks. Relevant other medical history: chronic constipation (has made recovery difficult) Note: I will speak with my surgeon about this during my post-op appt, but trying to sort this out in the meantime. I had pancreatic surgery 2 weeks ago to remove a functional neuroendocrine tumor. I have never really had an appetite, but post-surgery I am struggling greatly to eat and losing a lot of weight. I did not eat at all for 4.5 days following surgery, but still was not hungry. After this, I tried eating, but could only manage 2-4 bites of bland foods (soup, plain potato) before feeling overly full and in pain. I did have bowel ileus which took some time to resolve; resolving that mostly eliminated the pain, but I still struggle to eat. Currently I am managing two Ensure Completes per day, which is getting me 60 g protein (great), but only 700 calories. I can not manage anything else. I experience no hunger, and all intake is forced (I wait until I don't feel overly full, then try some more ensure). The surgical oncology team is aware, and I did speak to my PCP, however I am frustrated as my intake is going down rather than up. Ex: I was managing 2 ensure completes + few bites of soup, but last 3 days I only managed the ensure completes. I am told loss of appetite is normal after major abdominal surgery, but is there any thoughts on how long it might take to resolve? Weeks? Months? One thing I noticed: the right side of my staples is very hard and tender (left side feels soft). When I drink ensure, it does sort of feel like pressure on that hard part. Maybe it's somehow pressing against my stomach? Relevant info: - take miralax 3x daily for past 4 years due to chronic constipation. This hinders my ability to eat, as each dose keeps me full for hours. However, without this regiment I end up with severe constipation and even more difficulties eating. - Normal weight gain "tricks" I've used in past (i.e. oil, nut butters) won't work right now as I'm trying to reduce fat to rest the pancreas
