Question for people in their 50s through 70s about saving for retirement.

Background:42(M) whom is healthy. My wife has kidney disease (39). She had a transplant from her sister at 27 years old. Question: If you had extra money above your monthly expenses in your late 30s early 40s did you use it to save for retirement ? If so do you regret it now that you are older and unable to live as comfortably with your illness as you did in your younger years ? Or do you think it’s better to just keep piling the cash in Roth, 401 and brokerage account to be more comfortable at your older age. Now if both partners are healthy and expected to live 80 years I know you should save as much for years 65-8x as possible but when life expectancy probably is not as long as an average healthy person and the quality of life( dialysis maybe) in those later years may be lower is it better to just spend all that extra money now? \* We do have money saved for retirement and if we never invested again after today we’d still have about a little over 2mil when I turned 63 and she turns 60.
