Budgeting & ADHD

Post Content

Hey, hoping to get some advice from people who actually get it. My girlfriend has ADHD and one of her bigger struggles is budgeting and saving. She's not irresponsible - she genuinely wants to save, has goals, knows what she should be doing. But theres this gap between knowing and doing where ADHD just seems to win. The main things I've noticed are the impulse purchases, especially online and especially late at night. The "I need this NOW" feeling hits hard and by the time the thing arrives shes already forgotten why she even wanted it. Theres also the subscription creep where she signs up for stuff, forgets they exist, then we find like 6 months of charges later. And the hyperfocus spending - discovers a new hobby and suddenly £200 is gone on supplies for something she loses interest in within a week. She also avoids looking at her accounts because the anxiety of checking just makes her avoid it more. It frustrates her a lot. She wants to be better at it. What's helped so far is I handle the boring recurring stuff like bills and savings transfers so she doesnt have to remember. For impulse buys she screenshots what she wants and waits a few days before deciding - maybe like 70% of the time she forgets about it completely which has actually saved loads. No judgement from me either, learned that just made her hide things. And we try to celebrate small wins. But theres probably more we could be doing. She wants to feel more in control herself rather than relying on me for everthing. For those who've figured out systems that work with your brain - what helps with impulse control? How do you make yourself look at finances without avoiding it? Any apps or tools? She's tried budgeting apps before but they need too much maintainance. Also how do you deal with slip ups without it derailing everything?
