Abnormal Pap AGC and mixed messaging from doctors
Post Content
I’m a 38F, mother of two. I recently had a Pap smear that came back as AGC (atypical glandular cells). A doctor from the office called me with the results and said this is something they see often and that the follow-up tests are routine and done every day, and that it’s nothing to worry about. She was chatty and made jokes and scheduled the procedures like it was a routine checkup. At my appointment for colposcopy and endometrial biopsy today, I asked the doctor directly if these abnormal cells can be present for non-serious reasons. She said very candidly that AGC is rare and concerning and that further testing is needed to rule out cancer. She seemed very serious and not reassuring at all. She also ordered a pelvic ultrasound and discussed additional follow-up and possible LEEP. I was taken aback because I went in with zero worries and left feeling kind of shaken. The tone difference has left me confused about the actual level of concern. More boring info in case it’s helpful: Over the past few years I’ve had hormonal and cycle changes after my second pregnancy. My periods used to be heavy and painful when I was younger, but now they are lighter and shorter. I have frequent spotting between cycles and significant breast tenderness for about two weeks before my period which is new to the mat’s couple years. My biggest symptoms are hormonal and mood-related in the luteal phase, but I do also have a history of retained placenta and D&C after my last birth. Thanks for any insight.
